Celebrating Women's History Month

When I started working on women's history about thirty years ago, the field did not exist. People didn't think that women had a history worth knowing.
—Gerda Lerner, Women and History (1986; 1993)

Twenty years ago, the United States Congress voted to name March National Women’s History Month. Since that time, this month has been a celebration of the accomplishments of women. Women have made important and often overlooked contributions to the success of this country, and Women’s History Month provides us with an opportunity to showcase some of their vast achievements. This is the time for looking back at the progress women have made and for utilizing the social and political rights that we have worked for. Learning the history of women and teaching it to younger generations will create a clear vision for the future of the women’s movement and continue its momentum.
We will be honoring this special month at HippyMom.com so stop in and take a look around. We will be taking a closer look at some issues that women are facing, as well as spotlighting women who have made important contributions in these areas. Test your knowledge of women’s history in our trivia contest. Come spend some time in our online community where women are supporting and helping each other be the best women we can be.

In honor of International Women's Day: Speech from WIMSA Memorial Dedication 1997

My dear Shipmates and Friends:

It is my hope that you can feel the pride and pleasure that are mine in being able to be with you here today. I'm very glad to be here for the Women In Military Service For America Memorial. The Memorial will be a lasting tribute to women who have served their country in the Armed Forces and one which is long overdue.

In my 101 years of living, I have observed many wonderful achievements but none as important or as meaningful as the progress of women in taking their rightful place in society. When I served in the Navy, women were not even allowed to vote!  Now women occupy important leadership positions, not only in the military, but also in business, government, education and in almost every form of human activity.

Mine was not the first generation of women to serve our country, but we did our part, serving with honor and distinction. To those women who are now in military service, I say, "Go for it!" You are doing wonderful work and it's very much appreciated. To those young women who may be thinking of a career in the military service, I say, "Go for it!" You will find a world of opportunity waiting for you. For my part, I have always been very proud of my Navy service.

It is not likely that I will be meeting with you again, so I bid each of you a fond farewell. God bless the United States Navy: God Bless America and Goodbye!

Sage

This month’s herb is sage. Sage is more than just a culinary herb to flavor your stuffing! Of course that is an excellent use. sageFor me, sage is used mostly as an herb for ceremonies, rituals, and other types of energy clearings; however, I like it in my stuffing too!
From the book, Nature’s Pharmacy by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, “Why should anyone die who has sage in their garden?” sums up the various ways in which sage can be used. Its botanical name Salvia comes from the Latin word “to save or to heal”. Dating back thousands of years, it has been used as a digestive aid, appetite stimulant (like you need that at Thanksgiving!), to relieve gas, cramps and bloating. Sage contains thujone, a volatile oil that can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. However, using it as a cooking spice is considered safe. Medicinally, it should be avoided in large amounts during pregnancy. But after pregnancy, it can be used to help dry up milk due its estrogenic cooling action; also, for hot flashes, diarrhea, colds, flu, and excessive perspiration. Use for coughs, throat infections and to dry up phlegm by taking it as a tea preparation. Now if you would like to color the gray or white hair, use it as a rinse or for dandruff, oily hair or scalp infections. Its thujone oil has anti bacterial properties that kill all types of bacterial infections. Sage is also an antioxidant and an antimicrobial agent. If you have high blood sugar, it may help to lower it by drinking it as a tea on a regular basis. Sage’s other active ingredients include terpenes, tannins, phenolic acids and flavonoids.
sageUse the leaves dried in teas (1 tablespoon per cup of water) or infused. Many people like to mix it with mint, lemongrass or chamomile or other herbs to cut its pungent flavor.  Gargling with sage tea or taking small sips throughout the day is good for throat and upper respiratory congestion. To dry up breast milk or reduce perspiration, drink several cups a day for a few of weeks as needed. As a tincture take 1/8 to ½ teaspoon in a sip of water once or twice a day. From the book, The Woman’s Book of Healing Herbs by Sari Harrar and Sara Altshul O’Donnell, as an infusion, put 4 heaping tablespoons of dried sage in a cup of hot water. Cover tightly and steep for 4 or more hours. Susan S. Weed, an herbalist and herbal educator from Woodstock, New York, and author of the  Wise Woman series of herbal health books, including Menopausal Years: The Woman’s Wise Way, cautions against taking too much in large quantities because it “…can provoke irritability.” As of this writing, I haven’t found any contrary interactions with pharmaceutical drugs form my resources; however, as with anything, consult a professional health care provider with concerns or questions. I am not a professional, just a person who likes to use herbs along with other tools to improve my health and my family’s health and well being.
Sage is also used outside the kitchen and medicine cabinet for a different type of healing. It is used to cleanse the auric field. Kenneth Meadows from the book Shamanic Experience gives a good explanation. “As we go about our daily lives, dust and grime from the atmosphere adheres to our physical bodies, and for our own health and comfort we need to wash it off. Our auras are similarly affected by our location and by the energy fields of other humans, but it is ‘psychic’ substance which attaches to the aura, in the same way that cigarette smoke penetrates a fabric and ‘sticks’ to it.
American Indians had a special way of cleansing the aura. They used smoke from burning herbs to penetrate the aura and gently and effectively dilute and disperse psychic ‘dirt’. This method was called ‘smudging’.
The herb they used was sage, which Indian tribes regarded as a sacred plant whose special qualities set it apart for cleansing. The smoke from burning sage banishes negative energies from the surrounding atmosphere that cling to the aura.” I like to use sage for smudging when I have had a rough day or week, or when I feel like I am getting sick. I sometimes will smudge before I give a Reiki or other energy treatment, as long as the person doesn’t have respiratory problems. I use a ‘smudge bowl’ or sea shell and loose leaves most of the time. I can control the amount of smoke alittle better than with a smudge stick. To smudge, hold the receptacle or stick in your left hand, light the herb or blend (you can also use sweet grass and lavender to add a blessing, or cedar to attract positive energies) and then fan the smoke with a cardboard or feather fan first towards your chest and up towards your throat and face and then over your head. Continue fanning the smoke down to your lower body and towards your feet. I like to smudge the back, too. If fanning another person, they should ‘collect’ the smoke by drawing it toward their face with their hands. Anything can be smudged: rooms, houses, objects, crystals, jewelry. I definitely saged my sons’ cars after they bought new used cars and after they had their first fender benders. I also offered a blessing. To me, sage is a sacred sensational herb and I haven’t even tried it for gray hair yet!

Many blessings to your health.   ~Kim Anderson

It's almost spring...

broomIs anybody planning their spring cleaning yet?? Have you thought about making sure you are not making your house dirtier by bombarding it with toxic chemicals??

Did you know that the air inside a typical home is up to 10 times more polluted than the air outside??

Your spring cleaning efforts to rid your living space of dirt, dust, mildew or grme might make it a more dangerous environment for you and your family. And that's not all - many of the ingredients in household cleaners contaminate the air and water as well as thousands of organisms, from algae to wildlife, when they are washed down the drain and make their way out into the ecosystem.

The EPA has found that the immediate health risks associated with the use of conventional household cleaning products include asthma attackes, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders and memory impairment. Long term studies have not been tested, since a lot of these chemicals have only been around since World War II.

These toxic chemicals include the following:

Formaldehyde - a volatile organic compound, found in liquid cleaners and floor polishes, that is suspected of causing cancer.

Chlorine Bleach - a toxic compound tht irritates the respiratory system and emits poisonous vapors when combined with ammonia or vinegar.

Petroleum distillates (napthtas) - non-renewable, oil-based resources found in furniture and floor polishes that can affect the central nervous system and lead to cognitive and behavioral problems.

Pesticides and fungicides - such as chlorine and alkyl ammonium chlorides, found in most conventional antibacterial cleaners and mildew removers. They can cuase skin irritation and nervous system damage.

There are 2 ways to switch over to eco-friendly products - you can gradually replace them as you use them up (just ensure you always wear gloves, and make sure you ventilate the area you are working in) or toss them out once and for all.

If your home contains young children, or anyone who is pregnant, sick or sensitive to chemicals, you should purge them immediately, by contacting your local recycling center about how to dispose of them properly.

There are many fabulous non-toxic cleaners on the market today, or you can use regular old supplies like vinegar and baking soda, if you can't afford to replace all your products immediately.

All that is important is that you DO it. Your family is counting on you!

Fat Flush Plan

Looking to accelerate weight loss and maintain weight control, while managing hormones and bringing out your most radiant looks? The Fat Flush Plan promises to uncover and correct the five hidden factors that sabotage weight loss and vitality: liver health, food sensitivities and resulting waterlogged tissues, fear of eating fat, excess insulin/excess inflammation, and stress.

The Fat Flush Plan has three distinct phases, created to help you lose weight and to cleanse your body:
• Phase 1: The Two-Week Fat Flush ® — This initial two-week phase will jumpstart weight loss for dramatic results.
• Phase 2: The Ongoing Fat Flush ®
The next step for individuals wanting to lose additional weight and pursue a more moderate cleansing program, while enjoying more variety in food choices. Phase 2 is designed for ongoing weight loss, until you reach your desired weight or size.
• Phase 3: The Lifestyle Eating Plan
Phase 3 is the Fat Flush ® maintenance program, designed for lifetime weight control. It provides guidelines to maintain your healthy weight, and to increase your overall well-being.

This month, we will focus on Phase 1 – The Two-Week Fat Flush.

As with any diet and/or exercise program, it is imperative that you discuss your plans with your physician, before beginning. Additionally, it is important to set goals, throughout the phases, track your progress in some sort of journal, and only plan on weighing in once a week.

Only certain foods are allowed during Phase 1, primarily whole, natural foods, without added salt. Trans fats, caffeine, sodas, alcohol, aspartame and sugar are all off-limits. Many spices, yeast-related vinegars (except apple cider vinegar), soy sauce, prepared mustards, and barbeque sauces are not allowed because of their taxing effect on the liver and the fact that they may stimulate fat-promoting insulin.

The herbs and spices allowed are not just for taste, but accelerate metabolism, assist digestion, regulate blood sugar levels, reduce water retention, and protect against disease. Extremely hot spices such as curries, should be avoided since they can trigger water retention.

During Phase 1, all oils and fats (other than flaxseed oil and essential fatty acid supplements) are to be eliminated. All grains, breads, cereal, and starchy vegetables are also off limits. Additionally, you will not find any dairy products (except whey) in this phase, as dairy is one of the top five food allergens. Your calcium will come in the form of greens.

Aries... arrogant, but exciting!

aries

ARIES (March 21 to April 19):
Chickens born under the sign of Aries are natural leaders possessing a pioneering determined spirit, who wish to make their mark on the world. They cross the road to assert themselves and seek action, daring and adventure.

True or False: According to most popular astrologers, an Aries sun sign personality will start a project and see it through to the end.

False - No, Aries is easily distracted.. Most Aries have several irons in the fire. An Aries will grow bored easily, and if a project is taking too long to complete will start something else. We also tend to be easily distracted by shiny things, like some new toy or another. If you want constant, look for a Taurean.

It's hard to believe, but only two U.S. presidents have been born under Aries. One was Thomas Jefferson and the other was John Tyler.

Al Gore (March 31) is also an Aries.

Each of the twelve signs of the zodiac can have their celestial energies amplified by introducing semi-precious stones and crystals into your life.

Spring Cleaning for the Mind

For me, winter is like weaving in the dark. I’m working at gathering thoughts and creating my web. Instead of seeing it glistening in the clarity of the morning, I leave those thoughts to gather cobwebs in the dark corners of my mind. With winter comes the urge to store things, and I begin to horde negative thoughts like a pack rat. Winter also encourages procrastination, so those unhealthy thoughts are left unprocessed and free to pollute the good with the bad.

thinkIt is during the last days of winter when I begin to feel the physiological consequences of the negative emotions that I have been storing. I may get a cold that I can’t kick, I won’t feel rested after sleep, or my thoughts will become increasingly jumbled. The body follows the mind’s lead, and being neglectful of keeping your mind healthy will lead to sickness of both. Having your mind cluttered with negativity suppresses the immune system, and we cannot utilize our mind/ body connection to stay well.

This can be especially important for women, as we seem to have a harder time focusing on self-care. It is important to find the time to nurture our own minds and bodies, just as we do for those around us. Women also worry much more than men and excessive worry will eventually manifest itself in the form of physical illness. Women hold onto negative thoughts and emotions because we feel that if we own them, we are in control. This is a self-defeating strategy, because if we allow them to clutter our minds and hold us back, they become what controls us. We can eat well, exercise, and care for our bodies, but if we neglect our minds we won’t ever have true health.

thinkIt is important to take the time to detoxify the mind and eradicate negative clutter. Just as we maintain our physical homes by regular cleaning, we have to work to keep our minds orderly and clear of debris. There are different techniques that we can use to accomplish this. I focus on releasing these things in the shower and letting them wash away. Some may create a fire and visualize letting them rise with the smoke and drift off, others may write them down into a journal, or visualize their minds through meditation.

No matter the technique, the important thing to do is to acknowledge each thought you decide to purge and examine it. You may not let them all go, but the ones you keep need to be arranged in their proper places. As you process them, you need to consciously release despair, bitterness, resentfulness, stress, and jealousy. Let go of grudges, as they are especially harmful to our own well-being.

An uncluttered mind is a powerful medicine for our bodies. As spring approaches, think of your mind as a garden. Free your space of weeds and pollution and make room for health energy to grow and thrive. Nurture your mind, spend time in nature, and pay attention to the natural balance of the world around you. Make it a goal to try and protect yourself by keeping the garden of your mind clean. Most importantly, trust in your ability to heal yourself. ~Holly

Sacred Silence

Ted Andrews in his book Animal Wise discusses a powerful exercise called the Silent Walk. It's an exercise that allows you to become one with nature.

marchs-finished-articles-dscn2084.jpg

By doing the Silent Walk you are allowing your body to be filled with the gifts of nature and fill your heart with the all that nature can give you. The exercise should be performed at dawn or dusk because this is the time when we increase our awareness that we share this world with all living things. It is a time we are more likely to be still enough to take into our heart the wonders of nature.

To prepare for this you should be giving yourself enough time where your able to be free of distractions. Naming this time as your TIME FOR ATTUNEMENT.
. Choose a location that is somewhat secluded and eliminates as much noise from traffic as possible. For example, an old country road that is seldom traveled, a park or nature center. Plan on walking at least a half an hour and then turn around and return. As you take the silent walk, breathe in the wonderful fresh air, take in all the colors your experiencing and when your ready touch items created by nature.

Animals can sense the energy of people. If they feel your peacful and unthreatened, they will not run away or hide. When coming across the animals it is important to slowly continue walking but avoid looking directly at the animal. Staring at the animal will be interpreted as a threatening posture. By remaining calm in control and sensitive to the animals you will allow kinship to develop within nature and animals. By entering into nature we are increasing our awareness that we share the world with all living things and the gifts of encountering animals will fill your heart with a warm feeling of blessed wonder. The kinship being created with the animals is coming to an understanding that we are not outsiders or possessors of the land but as distant relatives -co-inhabitants.

The Silent Walk exercise requires control, sensitivity and appreciation to the land and those who live in it. By giving yourself the time to take in nature you will "discover everything is an expression of the Divine Life-including ourselves. One of Nature's greatest gifts is her ending willingness to teach us about ourselves and our possibilities." Quoted by Ted Andrews in his book Animal Wise.

Through the Silent Walk, we are experiencing intimately the beauty and wonders of the animals and nature and coming to the understanding that every creature mirrors the extraodinary beings that we are.
